Understand what you’re arranging
An inspection.
A record of the findings.
An EICR concerns the existing fixed electrical installation. It records the inspection and test findings, including defects or deterioration identified within the agreed scope.
Tell us the property type, its location and why you need a report. The extent of the installation, access and agreed inspection scope affect the time and cost.
The property and its use
A home, workplace or agricultural property can have different inspection needs. Explain how the premises are used when you enquire.
The installation and access
The number of circuits, available records and access to the installation help establish the scope of inspection.
The report and any further work
Inspection and reporting are separate from remedial work. Discuss how findings and any subsequent work will be handled.

After inspection and testing
Know what the findings
mean for your property.
The report records the condition found, the inspection’s extent and limitations, and recommendations arising from it. It is not a promise that an installation will receive a satisfactory outcome.
Ask about anything you do not understand before deciding on further work. A report and a quotation to address its findings serve different purposes.
An EICR assesses existing wiring. It is not the same as testing individual portable appliances.
Condition and observations
The report identifies matters observed during inspection and testing, with their significance recorded.
Scope and limitations
Read which parts of the installation were included and any access or other limitations recorded in the report.
Next steps
Where findings need action, discuss their priority and what work is required. Do not assume repairs are included in the inspection price.
For general guidance, see Electrical Safety First’s inspection information.
Before the visit
A little preparation
helps the inspection.
Have records ready
Share any previous electrical report or relevant installation paperwork, along with the reason for the inspection.
Discuss access
Ask which areas and electrical points need to be accessible, and coordinate access with anyone using the property.
Plan for interruptions
Testing can involve power interruptions. Flag equipment or activities that cannot be interrupted when arranging the visit.
The right service for the question
Checking condition,
or planning a change?
If you need to understand the existing installation, ask about an EICR. If you already have a report recommending work, include that context in your enquiry.
If the proposed work involves your fuse box, see what to discuss about replacing a consumer unit. A recommendation should follow the actual findings.
A few useful answers
Your questions, answered.
What does EICR stand for?
Electrical Installation Condition Report. It records the findings of inspection and testing of an existing electrical installation.
Is an EICR the same as a portable appliance test?
No. An EICR concerns the fixed electrical installation. Testing individual portable appliances is a different service.
Are repairs included in an EICR?
Do not assume they are. Confirm the inspection scope and price, then discuss any work recommended by the findings separately.
How long will the inspection take?
It depends on the extent of the installation, its condition and access. Include the type of property and any previous report when enquiring so arrangements can be discussed.
How often does an EICR need to be carried out?
The appropriate interval depends on the property, its use, applicable requirements and previous findings. Check the recommendation on the existing report and ask about the requirements for your circumstances.
Does an inspection guarantee a satisfactory report?
No. The report must reflect the condition found during inspection and testing. Findings may require action before an installation can be considered satisfactory.
